Position Overview

The Director, Medical Affairs Field Team functions in a leadership and management role in the Medical Affairs department. This position leads the Field Medical team including, but not necessarily limited to, Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs). The Director will collaborate with commercial leadership to develop and implement a robust field medical strategy. Travel in this role is up to 70% within key US markets and Exact Sciences headquarters to provide national leadership and to support strategic scientific exchange, clinical education, and key opinion leader (KOL) identification and development.

This position is field based.

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Lead the Medical Affairs team and work closely with Medical Affairs leadership, disease-based medical directors, pathology, and field-based teams to implement customer strategies aligned with scientific exchange, clinical education, clinical research development, and key opinion leader engagement.
  • Manage the Field Medical team collaboration and support with various functions, including, but not limited to, Marketing, Market Access, Sales, Commercial Operations, Corporate Affairs, Clinical Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, and Compliance/Legal.
  • Develop and implement strategies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and processes to ensure that Field Medical teams perform their duties to meet objectives and in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Work in strategic collaboration with the Sales and Marketing departments and Field Sales teams to create and implement educational strategies for key clients.
  • Provide leadership in developing initiatives and processes to build and deepen relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs) as potential speakers and collaborators for Exact Sciences.
  • Provide leadership in development initiatives and processes to build relationships with key decision makers in health systems, medical groups, healthcare provider offices, state departments of public health, advocacy organizations, and national/regional professional societies.
  • Collaborate with Medical Affairs leadership in the development and implementation of the strategy for identification and development of KOLs.
  • Collaborate with clients and leaders on national, regional, and local levels to develop clinical insights that support medical research associated with new and existing products.
  • Provide Clinical Affairs and pipeline/product leadership with recommendations on investigator and site selection for future trials and studies.
  • Provide insights to Sales Force Effectiveness leadership regarding opportunities for updates and improvements in sales force training for sales force leadership and management.
  • Attend regional and national tradeshows, symposia, and scientific/clinical meetings.
  • Identify national and regional educational events, such as patient education events and continuing medical education (CME) events.
  • Lead the External Stakeholder Management pillar within the Medical Affairs function and play an active role in the Medical Affairs leadership team.
  • Help with managing alliance partnerships.
  • Assist in the management of travel expense budget to support scientific exchange and clinical education activities at key national accounts.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in life sciences or field related to essential duties of the job.
  • 10+ years of industry experience in healthcare or medical technology fields with Medical Affairs or similar industry experience.
  • 3+ years of experience leading or directing people and/or project teams.
  • Demonstrated track record of successfully leading and managing field-based medical affairs personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand the major data sources (clinical trials, studies, published reports, etc.), relative to the use of Exact Sciences’ products.
  • Excellent English written and oral communication skills, as well as effective formal presentation skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on producing high quality work.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license; no suspended, revoked, surrendered, invalid, etc. allowed.
  • Maintenance of automobile insurance to satisfy any applicable state or local requirements with liability limits of at least $250,000 per person, $500,000 per accident, and $100,000 in property damage per accident (250/500/100).
  • No more than two moving violations, events, or accidents within the last 36 months.
  • No alcohol or drug event in which a vehicle was driven by the candidate or employee, including but not limited to Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) failure, refusal to submit to alcohol or drug test, alcohol related suspension, etc. in the last 36 months.
  • No other results form the Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) check that exposes Exact Sciences to what Exact Sciences deems to be an unacceptable level of liability.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Public Health, Life Sciences, or field related to the essential duties of the job.
  • Experience with oncology programs.
  • Experience with clinical trials.
  • Experience working with and/or for advocacy groups and professional societies.
  • In-depth knowledge of the healthcare market.
