The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic, and government clients by administering, managing, and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has been a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

HJF is seeking a Clinical Research Data Abstractor to support the John P. Murtha Cancer (MCC) research projects at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington. This position will provide clinical data collection operations, including data abstraction/entry activities to ensure data is timely, comprehensive, and accurate, as well as provide feedback on the data collection process for improvement and quality control.

Responsibilities 

  • Accurately and efficiently gather patient data from various sources, including electronic medical records, paper records, and other sources, and document in the Data Tracking System for the Murtha Cancer Center.  Must be able to identify, interpret, and abstract relevant patient information from the medical record, ensuring the accuracy and completeness of data.
  • Maintain research database and spreadsheets as needed to track progress on retrospective data collection.
  • Perform clinical/outcome data collection for special projects and collaborations as needed.
  • Perform a quality control review of retrospective and active Case Report Forms to ensure the quality of cancer data.
  • Perform data management/entry activities as required by the protocol.
  • Interact with physicians, clerical support, and medical records staff in obtaining cancer data on enrolled patients.
  • Works closely with the site Clinical Research Coordinator to ensure ongoing excellence in the implementation, documentation, and data collection for MCC protocols.
  • Under minimal supervision, is responsible for extracting, collecting, and entering data from inpatient and outpatient records, pathology, surgical and radiology reports, and electronic health records (EHR) to abstract demographic, diagnostic, treatment, and survival information on cancer patients enrolled in the research protocol.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

  • Knowledge of healthcare information systems, including electronic health records (EHRs) and clinical data systems.
  • Knowledge of clinical data standards and regulations, such as HIPAA and ICD-10.
  • Clinical background or experience and familiarity with medical terminology specific to cancer pathology and treatments
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, pathology, physiology, and a practical knowledge of medical procedures and diagnoses.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with chemotherapy drugs and chemotherapy and radiation therapy regimens.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Able to work with a team under minimal supervision.
  • Maintains clinical quality measurement knowledge through self-development and keeps current on all specification changes relevant to assigned project(s).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications such as Excel, Word, and Access.

Work Environment  

  •  This position will take place primarily in a Hospital environment.

 Education and Experience 

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years experience required. 
    • A minimum of 2-4 years of experience in clinical data abstraction is required.
