General Summary

The Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) will serve as the liaison between the clinical staff and Heath System Information Services (HSIS) and will support the CIO in the continued integration of information technology into hospital and ambulatory practice settings to promote the highest possible quality, safety, and evidence-based patient care. This physician leader will have responsibility for physician engagement, adoption, standardization, and optimization of clinical systems. 80% of the responsibilities of this role will be dedicated to CMIO duties, with 20% being dedicated to clinical practice. The CMIO will play a key leadership role in the optimization of health information systems by building on UAB Medicine’s strong foundation of advanced clinical care. The CMIO will review proposed health information technology initiatives in terms of their impact on clinicians in all venues of care, working closely with HSIS staff, departmental informatics teams, clinicians, and other stakeholders, while being sensitive to organizational priorities and fiscal impacts.  The CMIO will be a skilled healthcare professional who has experience in a complex academic medical environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participates as a member of HSIS leadership and steering teams to represent the needs and requirements of the provider community.
  • Serves as an advocate of health system leadership in promoting the use of information technology in the clinical setting.
  • Serves as Chair for clinical advisory groups that provide broad-based input into the design of the clinical information system to support excellence in patient care and research.
  • Works in partnership with HSIS’ design and implementation teams to translate the organization’s requirements into specifications for clinical and research systems that support patient care, health system operations, and research activities.
  • Builds relationships with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, ancillary department personnel, medical records professionals and other patient care providers to develop an understanding of their workflow and facilitate the development and use of the clinical information system.
  • Serves as a member of key health system committees responsible for patient safety, quality improvement, and operational effectiveness.
  • Demonstrates high level of responsiveness to users’ needs, including training and ongoing support, to assure widespread provider support and use of the clinical systems.
  • Leads HSIS’s efforts to address physician burnout & EHR dissatisfaction through optimization of EHR functionality and usability.
  • Remains current with medical informatics trends, experiences, and approaches.
  • Oversees the organization’s informatics strategy for integrating care across clinical venues, leveraging electronic health records, other clinical systems, health information exchange, data and analytics and emerging innovative technologies.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

The Applicant must be a licensed physician with recent medical practice. A graduate degree in medical informatics and one year of work experience in medical informatics is preferred. In lieu of graduate training in medical informatics, a minimum equivalent of three years’ full-time experience in medical informatics systems will be required.

Special Skills

Keyboarding proficiency and basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications to include Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Personnel management skills and experience.  Basic knowledge of the budgeting process.  Effective verbal and written communication skills.  Effective presentation skills, including proficiency in virtual meeting applications.

Certificates/Licenses/Registrations

  • Eligibility for an unrestricted Alabama medical license.
  • Eligibility for medical staff privileges at UAB Medicine (minimum 0.2 FTE clinical practice required).
  • Current board certification from a specialty board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties or the American Osteopathic Association.
  • Experience in clinical informatics and practicing in an academic medical center.
  • Experience implementing and using Electronic Health Record.
