Directory listings for medical-legal consulting for physicians

Published by

Medical legal consulting for physicians is an exciting, mentally challenging, and rewarding opportunity that can be done “on the side” of a full-time position or, for some, as a sole source of income. It’s an excellent alternative line of work for experienced physicians who want to contribute their knowledge and skills toward helping people without practicing direct patient care. Moreover, the financial remuneration is high.

Unless you’re in a highly specialized area of medicine, are very well known in your field, or have connections, getting starting in medical legal consulting can be a challenge for physicians. One effective way to set your consulting gig in motion is to get listed in an expert witness directory.

How medicolegal consulting directories work

Like expert knowledge consulting, these directories intend to match experts with companies that need the help of a certain type of expert. The details of how they accomplish this varies between directories. Variables include payment structures, requirements to be listed, the credentials needed to search the directory, and others.

I’ve compiled a list of 10 medical legal consultant directories that are great options for physicians interested in this type of work.

With these first 6 companies, there is a fee for you – the expert – to be listed in the directory. Attorneys as well as the general public can search the directory for free. They are able to see your name, profile, and areas of expertise. Some publicly list your contact information, while others include a method for potential clients to contact you through the directory site itself in order to keep your information private.

1. JurisPro Expert Witness Directory

JurisPro was formed by a group of attorneys as a way for the legal community to gain access to expert witnesses easily. Their directory includes experts from a wide range of fields, including medicine.

Cost: $399/year (discounts for multiple-year subscriptions)

2. SEAK Expert Witness Directory

SEAK is well known among physicians with (or looking for) nonclinical careers. In addition to their expert witness and medical file review directories, they offer a comprehensive expert witness training program for physicians.

Cost: $545/year (higher for additional features such as a half- or full-page print ad)

3. Experts.com

Experts.com offers an expert consultant directory along with their expert witness directory. They also indicate that a new feature is coming a soon – an “Expert Answers” portal.

Cost: $450/year

4. ALM Experts

ALM is a large directory of over 15,000 experts from a range of expertise areas. Their database also features court reporters, investigators, and litigation support professionals.

Cost: $749/year for a regional directory (higher for additional features, and lower if you purchase listings in multiple regional directories)

5. HG Experts

HG Experts is another broad directory that spans beyond just medical experts, though medical is a focus area. It’s also a resource to find litigation support and other legal services, as well as industry publications.

Cost: $295/year for a full listing (though you can list just your name and contact info free of charge)

6. ExpertPages

ExpertPages claims to be the first Internet directory of experts, expert witnesses, and consultants. It offers training and educational materials, and a service to assist in pairing lawyers with appropriate expert witnesses.

Cost: $495/year

These next several expert directories are a bit different than the ones above, in that they require acceptance through an application process and don’t charge a listing fee.

7. Thomson Reuters Expert Witness Services

Thomson Reuters‘ expert profiles are not listed publicly online. The company plays an active role in matching expert witnesses with clients. Of note, medicine is not one of their specific focus areas; however, their fields of expertise include biotech & pharma and intellectual property, which may be fitting for some physicians.

Cost: None to apply. Clients pay a billing rate set by Thomson Reuters.

8. ForensisGroup

As with Thomson Reuters, ForensisGroup doesn’t make their directory listings publicly available. Part of the service they offer is personally matching physician expert witnesses with attorneys.

Cost: None to apply. Payment comes into play only if you work with a client through ForensisGroup.

9. The Expert Institute

While The Expert Institute allows anyone to search their directory and contact an expert through their portal, they specialize in providing a team of researchers (including doctors) to pair clients with the most suitable physician experts.

Cost: None to apply.

10. American Medical Forensic Specialists

American Medical Forensic Specialists sets themselves apart by including only physician experts who actively practice medicine. Potential clients can search AMFS’ directory online and see de-identified information about the experts. However, all communications and expert-client contracts go through AMFS.

Cost: None to apply.
