Job Description:


This position is a leadership position within the Medical and Scientific Office and reporting to the Chief Medical Officer which serves as the Executive Physician Director over Direct Patient Care (DPC) Services and Emerging Cell and Gene Therapy Offerings.  This person oversees the development and implementation of all related medical policies and procedures guiding this service line and is responsible for the long-range planning, strategy, and management of the operations from a medical standpoint. Oversees national, system-wide medical activities and provides medical guidance and support to Program Management, working closely with senior management. Works with Program Management to develop budgeting and staffing requirements. Represents this business line from a medical standpoint to senior management at the national level. This person will also have limited oversight to direct the medical aspects of regulated blood center operations including collections, donor management, recipient and donor adverse reactions, suspect product investigations, and other operational systems.


  • Responsible for strategic planning for Direct Patient Services/Emerging Therapies programs.

  • Oversees planning process and ensures that long-range goals are established for program management staff and are aligned with national initiatives and medical compliance.

  • Actively involved in expanding this program through direct sales presentations and assisting program management with medical advice.

  • Represents medical interests to national senior management and when requested, will participate in contract negations and customer meetings.

  • Ensures medical representation at Process Council meetings and on national committees.

  • Provide expert medical opinion and participate as needed in all medically related litigation involving as requested by Chief Medical Officer or the Office of General Counsel.

  • Oversee medical activities including providing medical consultations indirect patient care, transfusion medicine, and blood banking to hospital customers Ensure the program meets all medical regulatory requirements, as well as initiate actions to foster a quality and compliant driven environment.

  • Review quality management reports and direct programs to address problem management medical activities.

  • Coordinate and consult locations to meet customer needs and maximize resources which may include personnel, facilities, and equipment.

  • Interact with hospital customers, donors, and staff to provide consistent, timely, and comprehensive medical guidance and information.

  • Assist with the implementation and standardization of process including program structure, minimum staffing requirements, and succession planning to enhance operational needs as it relates to medical changes.

  • Works with program management to develop guidance to ensure appropriate patient care and staff training.

  • Approve and provide input to related projects and initiatives as it relates to medical concerns.

  • Perform medical director and clinical duties to support regional, divisional or national activities.

  • Will operate under general guidelines from national senior management.

  • Will work directly with Sr. Management to set priorities and own work.

  • Provide support, development, and/or leadership guidance to all volunteers.

  • Coordinate collaborative meetings to include medical, operations, and quality to allow for transparency of activities to all stakeholders as well as innovations and services related to the offerings of this business line.


  • M.D. or D.O. degree with post-graduate training/specialization in blood banking/transfusion medicine required.

  • Board-certified or eligible in internal medicine, pediatrics, or clinical pathology.

  • Board-certified or eligible in blood banking/transfusion medicine or equivalent is highly desirable.

  • Extensive knowledge of current/projected trends in transfusion medicine/blood banking and hospital health care highly desirable.

  • Knowledge of medical/technical principles of blood center operations desired.

  • Must be licensed in the state of the primary site of assigned regions and other states served by the region/division as needed.

  • Must obtain and maintain professional credentials in medicine, including but not limited to state medical licensure, laboratory director certification, and specialty boards.

  • DEA certification may be required.

  • Minimum 10 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and related experience required.

  • Experience in blood banking/transfusion medicine or related field is desired.

  • Experience in blood center operations with increasing levels of responsibility is highly desirable.

  • Experience in relevant medical/scientific research and scholarly activities sufficient to warrant academic appointment is highly desirable.

For those candidates located in Colorado, the salary range for this position is: $230,000 - $270,000
