The Executive Director, Graduate Medical Education is responsible for the development of the ACGME residency training programs. S/he assists the Program Directors (PD) in developing and implementing these residency programs. S/he assists PDs to ensure compliance with ACGME accreditation standards and other regulatory requirements. S/he supports PD's critical evaluation of their programs and provides support/resources to effect change. S/he will assist Dental residency program directors in compliance with CODA accreditation standards and regulatory requirements. Programs currently exist in 5 facilities across the state. The Executive Director acts as a liaison between the PDs, Hospital Administration, residents, participating sites and other departments. S/he maintains knowledge of patient care and operational activities at the various training sites in which residents rotate. S/he relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. The Executive Director is responsible for leadership of the clinical research department based at Sacred Heart Medical Center and for oversight of the CME program.


The Executive Director, Graduate Medical Education will have the following accountabilities:

Program Accreditation and Compliance:

  • Assist the Program Directors (PD) in writing the program’s ACGME Program Information Form (PIF)
  • Understand the AGCME policies and procedures, including familiarity with the common program requirements as well as specialty-specific requirements
  • Manage and coordinate ACGME site visits, including preparation of the site visit for the PIF and other documentation
  • Prepare Program Letters of Agreement with participating institutions. Ensure agreements are revised as needed
  • Maintain program statistics as identified for the hospitals Joint Commission (TJC) accreditation requirements
  • Along with PD develop program policies to comply with ACGME accreditation
  • Along with PD, develop program, faculty, and residents/fellows for regulatory agency site visits (ACGME, TJC, DOH, etc)
  • Schedule program inter review, prepare inter review documents, and participate in review meetings
  • In coordination with PD act on citations received during site visits, and recommendations made during the internal review in a timely manner
  • Maintain all essential documents required for program accreditation

Department Operations:

  • Plan, organize and supervise the day-to-day operations for Graduate Medical Education and Research department in support of the Medical Center’s vision, mission and values
  • Supervise, evaluate the performance and productivity of Graduate Medical Education and Research staff, including the organization, assignment, and re-assignment of responsibilities/duties
  • Prepare/approve budgets for Graduate Medical Education and Research
  • Develop annual goals, objectives and process improvement plans, which support the organization’s strategic plan, mission and vision. Implements annual plan, evaluate progress and report outcomes
  • Serve as a leader and liaison promoting collaborative relationships among educational institutions, staff, physicians, students, and community partners.
  • Participate on interdepartmental teams and committees in support of staff development objectives
  • Provide leadership for the staff Graduate Medical Education and Research department, including training, development and evaluation
  • Maintain professional growth and development through continuing education and professional affiliations



Required experience/education for this position include:

  • M.D. or D.O. from an accredited program
  • Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Washington
  • 7 years of related work experience
  • 7 years of leadership experience in a Graduate Medical Education (GME) program or leadership in an area with transferable skill set
  • 7 years of experience in developing and implementing strategic plans
  • Knowledge of the principles of ACGME regulations. Familiarity with the common program, specialty specific and institutional requirements
  • Ability to schedule annual program evaluations and assist program directors with strategy development to correct any deficiencies in coordination with program director
  • Knowledge of budget preparation and control
  • Knowledge of Organizational Leadership/Development
  • Ability to assist program directors with faculty development
  • Knowledge of IT applications including GME applications at national, state, and institutional levels; electronic library, and computer based learning applications
  • Knowledge of customer service practices and skills
  • Knowledge of oral presentation, communication, and teaching skills
  • Ability to effectively lead organizational development and strategic change
  • Ability to evaluate, investigate and resolve related problems, issues and concerns
  • Ability to schedule and prepare annual institutional review
  • Ability to maintain all essential documents required for sponsoring institution accreditation
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and working relationships with others
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to perform in a leadership role and actively participates in numerous committees

Preferred experience/education for this position include:

  • 5 years of experience with graduate medical education with a teaching hospital or residency program
  • 5 years of experience with an accrediting body (ACGME, JACHO, etc.)
  • 5 years of demonstrated success in Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) program and/or institutional accreditation
  • Bi-lingual or multi-lingual skills
