Description
The Laboratory Research Director position supports the education efforts within the O’Donnell School of Public Health and will be responsible for directing and overseeing multiple labs, including personnel, operations, budgeting, and compliance with regulatory agencies.
Job Duties
Responsible for facilitating the development of new research grant applications for multiple labs in response to funding opportunities identified by faculty.
- Leads all aspects of one or more labs in coordination with the Principal Investigator, including management of personnel, operations, and budget of the entire lab.
- Oversees and supports the development of individual and complex funding proposals for various labs through effective interactions with all involved parties and by providing proposal management, proposal editing and/or writing integration services, program and budget development, and high-level advice and guidance.
- Hires, mentors, and supervises OSPH research personnel, including overseeing and guiding their involvement in developing complex and individual grant applications, and the review and editing of grant components, including technical sections.
- Supervises laboratory and office personnel, maintains personnel records, completes performance evaluations, and recruits and trains both clerical and technical support using managerial skills according to departmental and university guidelines.
- Advises faculty on the suitability of and approaches to large, multidisciplinary funding opportunities from federal and non-federal sources that capitalize on existing strengths and expertise.
- Collaborates with individuals at all levels of the organization to ensure successful integration of grant application components and full compliance with all funding solicitation and sponsor requirements.
- Through existing mechanisms as well as research and communication with possible sponsors, identifies large, multidisciplinary funding opportunities from federal and non-federal sources that capitalize on existing strengths and expertise.
- Actively participates in relevant institutional committees and working groups.
- Plans and coordinates duties, schedules, project activities, equipment usage, operating time, research studies, billing, and space for a large group of people ensuring efficient operations for one or more labs.
- Coordinates availability of technical assistance, appropriate chemicals, and special equipment to ensure timely preparation or completion of clinical work or research projects for various labs.
- Oversees ordering and allocation of all laboratory supplies, materials, and equipment; maintains adequate inventory to ensure efficient operation of projects.
- Maintains information on warranties, service contracts, operating manuals, licenses, and permits; oversees the maintenance of laboratory equipment in order to ensure compliance with all regulations and safety standards.
- Troubleshoots problems and design training according to government regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Experience and Education
Required
- Master’s degree in a scientific field, business, healthcare, or a related field is required.
- Minimum of eight (8) years of experience working with faculty in an academic or research setting, including a track record of effective communication as well as familiarity with extramural grants and/or contracts. Previous supervisory experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional years of directly related experience may be considered in lieu of stated degree on a year-for-year basis.
