Under the administrative supervision of the Chief Executive Officer----ensure appropriate, effective, and efficient psychiatric services on behalf of the Saginaw County Community Mental Health Authority (SCCMHA) consumers.  The Medical Director is responsible for planning, developing, organizing, and providing direction to all SCCMHA mental health service programs, activities and services. This position will work with SCCMHA and MSHN (Mid State Health Network-PIHP) clinical leadership to ensure that services are in compliance with applicable clinical standards, State and Federal laws, and all other regulatory requirements.

  • Ensures appropriate training of behavioral health clinical staff in accordance with current standards of behavioral health practice and professional licensure.
  • Establishes and implements standards for medical practices and policies.
  • Oversees all psychiatric services, including recognizing and implementing service standards, supporting administration policies, resolving psychiatric practice questions, planning clinical education, and researching and implementing current evidenced-based psychiatric standards of care. 
  • Represents SCCMHA with community organizations, health providers, and other governmental agencies.
  • Reviews and approves diagnostic evaluations, assessments, treatment plans, and quarterly evaluations, documenting these processes within the EHR. 
  • Oversees the evaluation and performance of assigned subordinate management and supervisory personnel within the medical director reporting structure. 
  • Ensures compliance with all Federal and State requirements for documentation and billing. 
  • Consults with the CEO and onsite medical leadership related to behavioral health and administrative challenges affecting patient care. 
  • Coordinates and supervises the practice of all behavioral health clinicians and psychiatric staff including PAs, NPs, and Psychiatric Nurse Specialists. 
  • Provides leadership and oversight of training requirements and prescriber compliance with training requirements. 
  • Provide psychiatric evaluations, diagnoses, and plans to document the need for medication.  Prescribe medications where appropriate and evaluate consumer response and side effects.  Provides psychiatric consultation as needed.
  • Supervise and manage all aspects of medication services, including ordering and monitoring laboratory results and tests and supervising medication administration.



  • Requires an MD/DO degree in Child/Adolescent or Adult Psychiatry from an accredited school.     
  • Must have State of Michigan Physicians License, Controlled Substance License, and Controlled Substance Registration Certificate (DEA).  
  • Valid Michigan Driver’s license with a good driving record.


Minimum of 5 years experience in the practice of psychiatry. Background in telemedicine and clinical administration is strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Extensive knowledge of psychiatric diagnosis and treatment, mental illness, indications, and contraindications of medication and drug interactions, and mental health programs.  
  • Ability to relate to all segments of the community.  
  • Ability to handle individuals who may be distributive or potentially violent.
  • Excellent communication skills.  
  • Must be capable of admitting individuals to the psychiatric unit (s) and provide treatment consultation to providers working with consumers while in inpatient care and treatment.
  • Must be comfortable working with a remote team of clinicians.
  • Experience with leading a clinical team and performance management.
  • Experience with strategic planning, direction, and goal setting for a behavioral health department or initiative. 
  • Experience with supporting and supervising behavioral health clinicians.
  • Experience working with co-located providers such as an FQHC or pharmacy preferred.
